Johnson & Wales University

A view of McNulty residence hall through Gaebe Commons in Providence, Rhode Island.
College Description
Founded in 1914, Johnson & Wales University is a private coeducational institution offering programs that are geared to the success of a wide range of students. The main campus in Providence, Rhode Island, is nearby to some of New England's most spectacular sites, including Boston, Cape Cod and historic Newport, Rhode Island. Branch campuses are located in Charleston, South Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; North Miami, Florida; and Denver, Colorado. The mission of Johnson & Wales is to empower its students to succeed in today's world by integrating general education, professional skills and career-focused education. The academic focus is on two- and four-year degree programs in business, foodservice, hospitality and technology. Graduate programs leading to the Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Education are also offered. The University believes strongly in practical work experience as part of the student's education, and offers several co-op, internship and externship training programs. Johnson & Wales also owns nearly 20 operating businesses, or "practicum" properties, where students work and earn class credit.
Academic Life
Johnson & Wales offers a variety of associate in science degrees, bachelor of science degrees and certificate programs through its renowned College of Culinary Arts, College of Business, School of Technology and The Hospitality College. There is also a Continuing Education division and several graduate programs available. Through a three-term schedule, and selected summer courses, J&W gives students the opportunity to earn two degrees in four years of study. The largest foodservice and hospitality educator in the world, Johnson & Wales lets students learn their craft in state-of-the-art kitchens, laboratories and classrooms, as well as several University-owned restaurants and hotels. Business and technology courses provide a solid career-focused education in traditional majors such as accounting, management and electronics technology, to more innovative programs like international business. Because most classes are small in size, students get individualized instruction from the dedicated teaching staff, most of whom have years of industry experience.
Campus Life
A big part of being a student at Johnson & Wales is the abundance of student-life activities for all to enjoy. There are close to 100 clubs, organizations and NCAA Division III sports teams to choose from, as well as several Greek chapters. The Student Life Office also schedules many special events (concerts, guest speakers, comedy, etc.) with top-line entertainers such as Dave Matthews and Billy Joel. J&W students also belong to several social clubs and organizations with other Providence-area colleges, including Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Rhode Island. The University maintains eleven residence halls at its Downcity and Harborside campuses. Student services include personalized tutoring, career counseling, a Multicultural Center, orientation, and a mentoring program, among others. All new students also participate in a unique service-learning program, where they perform community service and volunteer activities within the local community.
Facilities and Resources
The facilities of the Providence campus are located throughout Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts. The Downcity campus is home to business, hospitality and technology students, and features several academic and residential facilities, as well as several university-owned businesses where students gain actual work experience. In nearby Massachusetts, students learn their profession at the university's hotel, restaurant, travel agency and equine center. The Harborside campus, located a short distance away and also in Providence, houses the university's world-famous College of Culinary Arts. Facilities include specialized classrooms and laboratories, production kitchens, bakeshops and dining rooms. Culinary students choose from four residence halls and enjoy a modern gym and weight training facilities, bookstore, snack bar and arcade. Students also take advantage of several learning facilities, including the university's multimillion-dollar library, various computer labs, a Multi-media Center, and the Culinary Archives and Museum.
Athletics/Sports
The university is a member of NCAA Division III play, and competes in the Eastern College Athletic and Great Northeast Athletic Conferences. Men's NCAA teams include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, hockey, soccer, tennis, wrestling and volleyball. Collegiate teams for women include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. There are also several intramural coed sports teams, including volleyball, floor hockey, softball, flag football, indoor soccer and basketball. Students also enjoy an abundance of recreational activities at the university's two fitness centers and gymnasium, including step aerobics, weightlifting, swimming and karate, among others.
Financial Aid
Johnson & Wales students are eligible to apply for a variety of financial aid programs, including the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Work-Study and Federal Perkins Loan programs. They are also eligible for university-based student scholarships and loan programs, as well as state-supported grants and scholarships. In the past, approximately 83 percent of the university's entering students have received some sort of financial assistance, and last year the university awarded more than $40 million in institutional aid to students at all campuses. Students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal processor to be considered for financial aid. Although there is no deadline, early application is strongly suggested for full consideration. Under J&W Guaranteed Tuition Pla, tuition will never be any higher than what students pay in their freshman year as long as they are continually enrolled.
Admission Requirements
Johnson & Wales University seeks students who have a true desire to succeed. Academic qualifications are important, but an applicant's motivation and interest in doing well are given special consideration. Graduation from high school or equivalent credentials are required for admission. It is recommended that students applying for admission into the culinary arts and baking and pastry arts programs have some prior education or experience in foodservice. Although no tests are required, all applicants are encouraged to submit scores from the tests of either the College Board (SAT) or American College Testing (ACT). High school juniors may apply for early admission under the ACCESS Program. Transfer students are required to submit official high school and college transcripts and to have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Credits to be transferred from other institutions are evaluated on the basis of their equivalent at Johnson & Wales.
